North East weather to hit up to 23C as UK expects another heatwave

Temperatures are expected to hit up to 23C in the region this week as the UK is warned of another heatwave to come. The Met Office predicts "prolonged sunshine" on Wednesday when temperatures are expected to hit the highest in the week.

A Met Office forecast predicts for Monday there will be a "mixture of patchy cloud and sunny spells. Remaining dry, and feeling warmer, with light winds."

The forecast for the rest of the week states there will be "variable amounts of high cloud on Tuesday, but prolonged sunshine is likely on Wednesday and Thursday. Dry throughout, and increasingly warm, with light winds."

The Environmental Secretary has urged water companies that hosepipes should be banned, as the rest of the UK is forecast to bake in temperatures of up to 28C.

George Eustice said some firms have already “rightly” taken action to mitigate the effects of the prolonged dry weather as he encouraged others to follow suit.

His remarks, the first public intervention by ministers, signal possible restrictions on watering gardens, washing cars or filling pools with hosepipes for millions more people across southern England in the coming days.

It comes as forecasters predict the warm weather will continue for most of the UK into next week, when conditions will stay dry and settled with little rain or wind.

Mr Eustice wrote in The Sunday Telegraph: “In accordance with their drought plans, water companies across the country have rightly taken action to mitigate the effects of this prolonged dry weather using the range of tools available to them.

“I strongly urge others to do the same”.
