The North East is set for a wintery start to 2023 as Monday, January 2 brings a drop in temperatures and a weather warning after sleet and snow showers overnight.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice in the region from midnight until 11am on the substitute New Year Bank Holiday, with freezing temperatures forecast to set in once again. But despite the icy conditions, Monday is expected to see the best weather of the week with a dry and sunny day ahead.
Long periods of rain and strong winds are forecast from Tuesday onwards, so anyone hoping to soak up the winter sun this week should make the most of it on Monday. Here's what the weather will look like hour-by-hour on January 2 in Newcastle, with highs of a chilly 4°C that will feel closer to freezing.
