Potential undergraduate students will have the chance to experience a little bit of university life during open days at their target schools. The deadline for students to get their applications into UCAS for September 2023 entries is January 25.
In these applications, students can list up to five choices for their higher education courses. These could be five different universities or five courses at the same university, but for any teenager, it’s a huge decision to make.
What better way to make sure you’ve made the right decision than to visit your university of choice? Here are the next open days for the north east’s five biggest universities.

Newcastle University
On-campus tours are available on three upcoming days - January 13, 18 and 20. At these events, you’ll get a feel for the city-centre campus, discover how to navigate campus as a Newcastle University student, get first-hand insights from student ambassador tour guides and see some of their world-class facilities, including the sports centre and library.
For those who find that it’s too short notice, the university is hosting a virtual student experience on January 11. Here, you can join live question-and-answer sessions, enjoy a live tour of the campus, join a student panel to find out about life as a student at Newcastle, find out more about Student Services including accommodation, health and wellbeing and student finance and speak to our admissions team and find out how you may be eligible for a lower entry offer.
Book your place on both the virtual event and the on-campus tour on the Newcastle University website.
Northumbria University
Those waiting for a Northumbria on-campus open day will have a long time to wait as those events aren’t in the calendar until June 23 and 24. However, that isn’t the final opportunity.
For students who are keen to experience what Northumbria has to offer, they are running a couple of virtual open days that can help open up the student experience. Sign up on their website for the sessions on accommodation on January 11 and future employability options February 16, both at 4pm.
Teesside University
If a look around the campus is what you’re after, then Teesside University’s open day on January 21 can offer just that. Speak to academics on the courses, explore your options, talk to the admissions team and to current students, and get to know the campus and accommodation options. Book online now.
Sunderland University
Sunderland University is offering an online look into what it can offer Year 13 students that are possibly still on the fence about applying for its courses. Held on the UCAS closing date, the virtual day aims to help students with the application process, answering any qualms and queries they may have.
Durham University
One of the top-rated universities in the country, Durham University is a stunning campus with courses to match. For those who add it to their UCAS choice list, there are open days to sign up for on June 16 and 17.
