Police have launched an attempted murder investigation with a man left fighting for his life in South Shields.

Emergency services were called to Brabourne Street at around 4.13pm on Monday and found a man, aged 54, who had sustained a serious head injury. He was taken to hospital where he remains in a "critical but stable" condition, Northumbria Police have confirmed.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

The force confirmed those involved are believed to be known to one another. The street is understood to have been cordoned off at either end overnight and police have remained at the scene on Tuesday.

Clap for Gordon: NUFC fans urged to applaud stabbed teen Gordon Gault on 14th minute of Carabao cup final

Newcastle United fans are being urged to clap for stabbed teenager Gordon Gault on the fourteenth minute of the Carabao cup final game.

The 14-year-old died in hospital six days after he was allegedly attacked with a blade on the street, in November.

Twenty people have been arrested in connection with his death, but nobody has been charged, and Gordon's mum Dionne Barrett believes there are people with information who are not speaking to police.

The Chronicle told last week how friends of Gordon's family plan to use Newcastle United's successful Carabao Cup run to raise awareness of his case, by displaying banners and fliers with his name and picture on around Wembley Stadium.

And they are also now urging the Toon Army to break into applause on the 14th minute of the game as a tribute to devoted Newcastle United fan Gordon.

Newcastle City Council to raise parking fines, council tax, and cut jobs to save £23m in this year's budget

Newcastle Civic Centre (Newcastle Chronicle)

Newcastle City Council has announced proposals to slash services, cut jobs and increase council tax in an effort to save £23m in this year’s budget.

The council - which says it needs to save £67m over the next three years - has announced plans to increase council tax by 4% next year, with £23.1m of budget cuts in the same period.

Parking fines across the city may increase to help plug the council’s financial hole, with documents estimating this could generate over £1m of additional income. The council also proposes to save £3.3m by “safely” reducing the demand for children, education and skills services.

A total of £1.66m can be saved, according to council figures, by strengthening community assets to ensure as many children and young people as possible can remain in the care of their families.

Carabao Cup final referee confirmed with Newcastle United fans concerned over last meeting

David Coote has been appointed as the referee for Newcastle United's clash against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, February 28.

Coote came under scrutiny for two apparent mistakes when he last refereed the Magpies during a narrow 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in March 2022. Kai Havertz sealed the win for Chelsea with an 89th minute winner, but Newcastle felt aggrieved after two key decisions went against them.

Coote's selection has raised eyebrows with Newcastle supporters who have not forgotten his last performance when officiating a Magpies clash. The referee has taken charge of 22 games this season.
