After firing Brown, many expected North Carolina to go after a coach currently working in college.
However, the Tar Heels might have bigger plans involving one of the greatest NFL head coaches of all time.
Bill Belichick and North Carolina have discussed the vacant head coaching position, according to Inside Carolina. The former Patriots head coach reportedly “blew UNC officials away” during the interview.
Belichick, 72, wants to coach again. However, North Carolina will likely turn to a younger candidate for its head coaching position.

If Belichick doesn’t get the job, who will?
Per BetOnline, the favorite to land the North Carolina gig is Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. The 42-year-old spent two years at Troy (23-4) before leaving to take the job at Tulane before the 2024 season. Tulane is 9-3 and plays Army in the AAC Championship on Dec. 6.
The other coach in the AAC game is Jeff Monken (+350), the second favorite to land the Tulane gig. Monken has been the Army head coach since 2014, holding a record of 80-56. In their first season in the AAC, Army is 10-1 and will host Tulane in the AAC Championship.
Other names to keep an eye on: Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann (+600), Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson (+1000), and Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell (+1000).
