Caleb Jones

A North Carolina man attacked a bail bondsman with an axe and killed his mother, according to police.

Caleb Jones, 47, has been charged with second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of assault inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, police said.

Two bail bondsman came to Jones' residence after he failed to make a court date, CBS 17 reported. Jones' 73-year-old mother Linda Hall attempted to help the situation, and a physical altercation began between Hall and Jones.

The two bail bondsman called 911 to report that Hall was unresponsive. While on the phone with police, one of the bail bondsman reported that Jones had gotten an axe and had hit the other bondsman in the upper body area.

Hoke County Sheriff's Office police responded to the call. As police and a neighbor attempted to assist the victims, Jones barricaded himself in the home, police stated.

Police were able to assist emergency medical personnel in transporting the victims out of the area. Hall later died from her injuries.

CBS 17 reported that Jones had failed to appear in court in October on five charges, including a felony for violating a domestic violence protective order, communicating threats, and fleeing to elude arrest.
