Norn Iron short-film festival launched to showcase local talent breaking into the industry

The Norn Iron Film Festival is a non-profit short film festival set up to showcase local talent to raise money for an amazing cause. All the proceeds including the entry fee, ticket costs and donations will be going to charity.

In the festivals first year running, the money will go to the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast. It costs over £6,000 a day to run the hospice and they rely on the support of local people to keep their doors open.

Katie Taylor, Norn Iron Film Festival director said she wanted to create an event that celebrates the talent working on the ground in the budding NI film industry while using the space to fundraise during a difficult time for charities.

Speaking to Belfast Live, she said: "The reason I created the festival was because I wanted to host an event with an ethos to celebrate creative talent while bringing the community closer together. We have had such an incredible response from the film community here, the number of submissions for films completely exceeded my expectations and really highlighted our astounding local talent.

"With how fast the tickets sold, this hopefully will be the first of many to come. We have all had family and friends affected by cancer, the reason I wanted to pick the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast as our chosen charity was to say a massive thank you to them for all the work they have done and to highlight how important the work they do for people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones.”

In 2022, the Norn Iron short film festival will be taking place on August 21 in the Sunflower Public House on Union Street, Belfast. It will host a wide array of different short films featuring everything from documentaries to musicals to thrillers and everything in-between.

Prizes donated and purchased from local businesses and artists will be up for grabs for nominated filmmakers including an audience choice award trophy for best film.

Katie continued: "We chose the Sunflower Pub for multiple reasons, for me personally it is my favourite pub in Belfast. It has a friendly and open environment which really suits the character of the festival."

One of the prizes donated includes the book ‘First Gyro’ by Larne man Norman Surplus who sadly passed away in April. His book tells the true story of his nine-year journey to live ‘beyond cancer’ and achieve the first circumnavigation of the world in a gyroplane.
