Normal People actor Paul Mescal 'engaged' to singer Phoebe Bridgers after speculation

Popular US singer Phoebe Bridgers is engaged to actor Paul Mescal, according to reports.

The news appeared to be confirmed in a recent interview the Irish actor and Normal People star did with The Guardian.

With just one line, the paper has sparked feverish speculation over the couple's future marriage.

The pair have been linked for the past two years, but only confirmed their romance with an Instagram post a few months ago.

Mescal, 26, has also spoken openly about his relationship with the 28-year-old songstress, telling GQ Magazine : "To have someone to lean on through such a mad, mad time has been invaluable. Really, I don’t know where I’d be without her."

Their romance began when Mescal followed Bridgers on Instagram during the 2020 lockdown, with the singer remarking in an interview with NME that "the cute boy" from Normal People had followed her.

"I got a little pitter-patter in my heart when I saw," she said.

Paul went on to chat with Bridgers during a lockdown livestream, saying at one point: "I think it's well documented that I love your music."

Bridgers replied: "Well, that makes me blush."

The pair reportedly stayed on Zoom for hours following the live broadcast, drinking and chatting together.

Many fans commented on the broadcast saying they felt they had gatecrashed the pair's first date.

Mescal then starred in the video for her track 'Saviour Complex'.

Fans have been reacting to the news of the pair's engagement on Twitter.

One quipped: "no because phoebe bridgers watched normal people, publicly thirsted over paul mescal and is now engaged to him and for that she’s my hero."

Another added: "i can’t believe we all watched phoebe bridgers and paul mescal’s first date on ig live and now they’re getting married."

"Oooh look at us we're Phoebe Bridgers & Paul Mescal, we're both really talented and happy and in love. Grow up," one user joked.

Mescal won't see any of the messages, however - he quit social media entirely last year.

“I just don’t think it’s particularly useful for people to see, like, literally you,” he told The Guardian.

“I thought it’s either get off the bus now or stay on it, and I wanted to get off. In 10 years I might rue the day I threw out my social media, but look, it just is what it is.”

Mescal's most recent film 'Aftersun' releases on November 22.

A plot summary of the film at Rotten Tomatoes reads:

"At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie's tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't, in Charlotte Wells' superb and searingly emotional debut film."

Bridgers has released two critically-acclaimed albums, Stranger in the Alps (2017), and Punisher (2020), for which she won 'Record of the Year' at the Libera Awards in 2020.

She has released a total of 19 singles, six promotional singles, and 12 music videos.

The singer, who hails from Los Angeles, California, has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and has 7.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Her most-sold single is 'Motion Sickness'.
