Recently released body camera footage from the New Orleans Police Department sheds light on the tragic events that unfolded during a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street on New Year's Day. The attack, carried out by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, including the attacker himself.
The footage, obtained through a public records request, captures the moment when officers confronted Jabbar, who was still inside his white Ford-150 that he had driven through Bourbon Street in the early hours of January 1. As officers approached the vehicle, Jabbar opened fire on them from beneath a deployed airbag, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire.
The video also shows civilians fleeing the scene as the gunfire erupted. The NOPD has confirmed that two officers sustained injuries during the shootout, which ultimately resulted in Jabbar's death. In total, 35 individuals were injured in the attack, in addition to the 14 civilians who tragically lost their lives.
The footage serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty and the swift actions they must take to protect the public during such harrowing incidents. The NOPD's response to the attack highlights the bravery and dedication of the officers who put themselves in harm's way to safeguard the community.
