Non-League club part company with Bristol Rovers hero after disappointing start to season

Gloucester City have confirmed they’ve parted company with Bristol Rovers hero Lee Mansell after a disappointing start to the campaign, almost a year to the day since he first arrived at the National League North club.

Former Gas midfielder Mansell took over at Meadow Park, initially as interim manager on September 25 last year, and after a challenging campaign last season in which they finished 17th, was expected to launch a promotion bid in 2022/23.

However, Gloucester have won just four of their opening 10 fixtures and lie 15th in the table after drawing 1-1 with Banbury in midweek, albeit just three points off a play-off berth.

A brief statement from Gloucester City on Thursday morning read: “Gloucester City AFC can confirm that the club have parted company with First-Team Manager Lee Mansell by mutual consent.

“We’d like to place on record our thanks to Lee for all of his efforts during his time at Gloucester City and wish him and his staff all the best for the future. Further statements will follow in due course.”

It was Mansell’s first senior management job having previously worked as Rovers Development Squad and academy coach before leaving the club in May 2021.

He remains fondly remembered in the north part of Bristol after 87 appearances for the blue and white quarters which includes striking the winning penalty in the 2015 Conference play-off final victory over Grimsby Town.

Gloucester boast a healthy former Gas complement in their squad with Jamie Egan on loan, ex-defender Daniel Leadbitter and academy prospects Kieran Phillips, Lucas Tomlinson and Ollie Hulbert, plus Sion Spence all part of Mansell’s squad.
