During a recent hearing, Governor Noem made a commitment to not revive the Department of Homeland Security's Disinformation Governance Board, which was established under the Biden administration. This decision was confirmed by Noem in response to Senator Josh Hawley's inquiry.
The Disinformation Governance Board, which collaborated with major tech companies to address online disinformation, had a short existence. The board was dissolved by the department in August 2022, just a few months after its inception.
The DHS had initially stated that the board was monitoring social media for posts related to human smugglers encouraging migrants to journey to the U.S. border and Russian election interference. However, leaked documents revealed that even after the board's dissolution, the DHS continued to focus on combating misinformation online on various subjects such as COVID-19, vaccines, racial issues, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, and aid to Ukraine.
