Noah Lyles talking to the clock after he broke the American 200m record was the best moment

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Hey, this is something awesome you’re going to want to drop everything for and watch (it’s literally a minute of your time).

Sprinter Noah Lyles — who you may have watched win bronze at the Olympics in Tokyo back in 2020 — broke an American record in the 200m at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, with a 19.31-second run that beat Michael Johnson’s record set in … 1996!

But it’s the moment after the race I want to focus on for a moment that was noted by some folks on Twitter, and rightfully so: After he crossed and checked the clock, he walked over and talked to it.

Seriously.

“Really?” he appeared to say, as the unofficial time showed him tying Johnson. He bent over as if it was a child who had just thrown his or her plate of dinner across the room. “Really?”

And as he turned away, it was official: A 19.31 run. An American record. He knelt down to pray, then celebrated by taking his singlet mostly off.

A super amazing run. An incredible sequence after. A record long held, smashed. I love every second and I hope you do too.
