No TransPennine trains to run from Lime Street during next rail strike

No TransPennine (TPE) trains will serve Liverpool when railway workers go back on strike next month.

Strike action has been announced by Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) and the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) for November 5, 7, and 9. The only TPE service to operate on those days will be between Huddersfield and York.

A reduced train plan is also planned to be in place on the days following each strike, with trains starting later and finishing earlier than usual. .

About the strike, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "Our focus in this dispute is the rail employers who have yet to make an offer that will create the conditions for a negotiated settlement. I call upon the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to unshackle the rail industry so they can come to a settlement with RMT."

The RMT's dispute is over jobs, conditions and pay. The union said that Network Rail members will be on strike on those days, while its members working for the train operating companies will take action on November 5.

Adam Fairclough, Head of Customer Experience Delivery for TPE, said: “We are saddened by the announcement that there will be further strike action by both RMT and TSSA at the start of next month, which will once again cause disruption to customers across the UK.

"This action will cause severe disruption to TransPennine Express services, and we will only be able to run an extremely limited service between Huddersfield and York on the strike dates. We are strongly advising those planning travel on this particular route to only do so if their journey is absolutely necessary.”

TPE is facing pressure after its recent performance, which saw it cancel 165 trains over three days last week. At a press conference earlier this month, Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham called for TPE and Avanti West Coast to be stripped of their franchises if matters do not improve on the railways in the North of England.
