No, the Duffer Brothers didn't edit *that* Stranger Things scene, but they have 'George Lucas'd' other moments

The Stranger Things writers have put a rumour to rest. (Supplied: Netflix)

Stranger Things is one of the biggest shows in the world, with multiple streaming records under its belt and a string of Emmy Award nominations to its name.

But it's in the news again after some fans claimed the show had edited a scene between Nancy and Jonathan to make one character look, as they describe, "like less of a perv."

So was the scene really edited? And which other Stranger Things moments have been changed that we don't know about?

*Also, heads up for minor spoilers.

Which scene with Nancy and Jonathan are we talking about?

If you cast your mind back to the first season of Stranger Things, you'll remember how Nancy Wheeler hung out at Steve Harrington's house in Chapter 2: The Weirdo on Maple Street.

But they weren't alone.

A sleuthing Jonathan Byers was in the bushes taking photos in a bid to track down evidence into the disappearance of his brother, Will.

While the scene shows Jonathan pointing his camera to Nancy through an upstairs window, the audience never sees him click the shutter when she starts undressing.

Instead, he lowers his camera and takes a photo of Nancy's friend Barb dangling her feet in the pool.

A rumour has started circulating online claiming that the Stranger Things creators removed the moment Jonathan takes the photo to make his character seem less creepy.

But Jonathan's photos from that night are revealed in the following episode and still includes one of Nancy undressing, leading Steve to call him a "pervert."

So was the scene actually edited?

The Stranger Things writers' room say it hasn't.

"No scenes from previous seasons have ever been cut or re-edited. And they never will be," their tweet read.

When one fan asked if this includes the Jonathan and Nancy scene, they said yes.

So where did this rumour come from?

It started online and, like the general nature of Internet rumours, wasn't fact-checked before gaining ground.

So while one episode doesn't show Jonathan taking that specific photo, the following episode still confirms it really happened.

So, no scenes have ever been edited in Stranger Things?

Well, no.

Despite the writers saying no scenes have ever, or will ever, be cut or re-edited, the Duffer Brothers have previously said they have "George Lucas'd" moments of the show.

The term refers to how Star Wars creator George Lucas regularly makes tweaks to his films after they've been released.

In an interview with Variety last month, Matt and Ross Duffer said they will likely tweak the date of Will's birthday in an earlier season, as it's not consistent with a scene in Season 4.

"I think what we're going to do is we'll go and George Lucas it," Ross Duffer said.

Matt Duffer explained how they'd make the tweak.

"We're thinking his new birthday is going to be May 22nd, because 'May' can fit in Winona's mouth [in the Season 2 scene where Joyce says the date of Will's birthday]. So that would be us George Lucas-ing the situation."

The Duffer Brothers say they'll tweak an episode by changing Winona Ryder's dialogue.  (Netflix)

In a follow up interview with Variety, Matt Duffer revealed the change to Will's birthday wouldn't be the first time they've edited the show after its release.

"We have George Lucas'd things also that people don't know about," he said, before revealing special effects in Season 4: Volume 1 were redone in the first week of its release.

"It's not, like, story, but you're essentially patching in shots. Netflix is — I don't think they've ever allowed people to patch on opening week and even weekend. And we said, 'Well, why not?' And he said, 'Well, it makes us nervous.' And we're like, 'Well, maybe we try it this time.' And it turned out fine."

The Duffer Brothers said one way to spot any patching is to compare Netflix episodes with DVD hard copies, so that's one way you could spend your time while we wait for the next season.
