'No suggestion' of food poisoning at Tottenham after Gary Lineker message as Harry Kane ill

There's 'no suggestion' of a food poisoning outbreak at Tottenham ahead of this weekend's game against Norwich. However, Harry Kane has been feeling unwell and is being assessed ahead the fixture.

football.london's chief Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold said on Twitter: "No suggestions of a food poisoning outbreak at Tottenham Hotspur despite rumours. However, Harry Kane has been feeling unwell - not food poisoning - and will be assessed ahead of Sunday's game."

The news comes after Gary Lineker alerted his followers to concerns that there had been an outbreak at his former club. The ex-England striker said: "Hearing there's a food poisoning outbreak at @SpursOfficial. No, I am not joking."

Lineker's words were always going to worry Tottenham fans who are eagerly waiting to see whether their team can secure Champions League football with a win over the Canaries at Carrow Road on Sunday. It's a situation that's remarkably similar to 2006, where north London rivals Arsenal pipped Spurs to fourth following an outbreak of food poisoning in the squad.

In 2006, Tottenham were a point ahead of Arsenal. They knew a win would see them qualify for the Champions League, but after what has come to be known as 'lasagna-gate', some players (as per the Athletic) around 10 members of the squad informed the club doctor that they had endured an extremely rough night, with a number of them being violently sick.

The players had eaten at a buffet dinner in a private room. Many of the players were said to have helped themselves to the lasagne, which was one of the food options along with steak, chicken and pasta. Spurs went onto lose against West Ham as the Gunners beat Wigan in their last ever game at Highbury.

With Arsenal trailing Tottenham by two points this time around, Tottenham fans would've feared the worst when Lineker tweeted what he did. However, Spurs fans can relax in the knowledge that there hasn't been an outbreak of food poisoning at the club, football.london understands.

That being said, despite training on Thursday, Kane has been feeling unwell. He was meant to be attending a media event on Friday evening but has pulled out as a precaution. It's not Covid as things stand but he'll continue to be monitored before Sunday's crucial clash.
