There is no such thing as a holiday according to Queen of the South boss Marvin Bartley.
The Palmerston gaffer was away recently as he prepares to start pre-season work with his squad in the coming weeks but he revealed the life of a manager is far from normal when it comes to time off.
He said: “There’s no such thing as a holiday to be honest. It’s just work in a different country.
“That really is it. My day would be; get up and go to the gym, have breakfast and then I’d take my laptop down poolside and I’d find a shaded area and do some work there until 2pm or 3pm every day.
“Normally I’d be watching games and players and fielding calls in and around that. I’d put my phone down at dinner time and I’d have my cut off at about 8pm every night but until that I was taking calls every single day that I was away.”
He added: “That’s the job though isn’t it? My missus has to understand. I’m not saying she does understand but she has to understand that’s the job. That’s the dedication. There’s no point in me doing it otherwise. If I want to go on holiday and do nothing I need to find another job.”
Queens have already got some business done this summer with keepers Murray Johnson and Gordon Botterill committing to the club and Kieran McKechnie and Harry Cochrane extending their stays at Palmerston.
Marvin said: “We’ve got some business done so far and there’s things in the pipeline.
“I’m meeting players and have Zoom calls with others lined up so we’ve got some of the work done. That was important to get some things done but there’s no rush.
“I spoke to the club and they know the way I work. I’d rather give it as long as I possibly can and get things right but there’s no guarantees in football. But if you can try and cross off as much as you possibly can then it puts you in better stead. To get some renewals done was perfect and I expect more in the coming week or so.”
