‘No question’ - Erik ten Hag on why Roy Keane was better than Patrick Vieira

Man United fans looking to lap up everything Erik ten Hag says got one more morsel from his pre-match interview ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal.

In a chat with Sky Sports, the Dutchman was unequivocal when giving his response to an age-old debate that's synonymous with the glory days of the rivalry - Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira.

He said simply: "That's clear, no question. Keane."

While he didn't expand on why he felt the Ireland legend was the superior player, he did also add that The Red Devils were always his preferred English team.

"My team in England was always Manchester United. I always supported this club, from the past I loved watching Beckham, Scholes, Ferdinand and Giggs, I always liked them."

And he adopted a similar tone when asked to compare the achievements of Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

He added: "What (Arsene) Wenger did at Arsenal was great, his philosophy I really respect that but Fergie built all of this."

Interestingly, he also alluded to the Scot still having a say in how the club is run, which is a far thornier topic of debate amongst United fans given how much his presence has hung over the club and his successors since 2013.

He continued: "I speak with him and we are happy with that, so are his advisors, we are grateful but now we have to build a new future, that is also clear."

Keane himself was on punditry duty for the day's big clash and reminisced on those great battles with Vieira and Co when United and The Gunners ruled the roost in the Premier League.

He said: "They were always brilliant. Both teams had a lot of big personalities and then myself and Patrick in midfield...they were brilliant.

"If I could come out of retirement for one game it would be that one."

Although both Arsenal and United are still a long way off from getting back to the summit of English football, their fans do have cause for optimism.

Arsenal's young nuclease led by Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have them top of the table having won all five of their matches so far this season.

Meanwhile after an admittedly disastrous opening two games which included a shambolic 4-1 loss away to Brentford, ten Hag appears to implementing his own identity on his charges having dropped captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo in favour of more energetic options that has resulted in an uptick in performances and results.
