No-nonsense Leeds landlord praised by punters for how he keeps 'undesirables' out of pub

People have praised a no-nonsense Leeds pub landlord who is on a mission to keep out “undesirables”.

Toby Flint, publican of The Scarbrough Hotel for 20 years, said "if you're barred, you're barred" and spoke out about what it takes to survive in the pub industry. The hard-headed gaffer spoke of how he’s not afraid to pull up his own sleeves and deal with mouthy customers himself, rather than let security initially handle it, in the Bishopgate Street boozer.

Readers have praised the “good job” of “lovely man” Toby who strives to create a good atmosphere for his punters. Toby himself stated how he has no greater pleasure of seeing customers return to his Leeds city centre pub, since moving over from Buckinghamshire and packing in his PHD in favour of a life in the hospitality sector.

Commenting on Facebook, Mark Addinall said: “He's bang right. I want a drink with friends, not to watch my back while doing that. Top man.”

Eamonn O'Hara said: “I was in Leeds last week celebrating my 60th birthday, had lunch in the Scarborough with my wife, daughter and her boyfriend. We had a chat with Tony the landlord, when he realized we were from Dublin he told us about his trip to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.

“He is a lovely guy and he runs probably one of the best pubs in Leeds city centre, we've been to the Scarborough many times, pre and post covid and always enjoyed our time there. Top quality food and beer and amazing value for money.”

Stephen Godden said: “We were on a rail tour back in February and had just under two hours to kill in Leeds. We ended up in here as it was pouring with rain and we didn't want to go any further.

“What a delightful place, a great pint and the local company was brilliant, haven't laughed so much in such a short period for years.”

Jewell Weir said “Well done Toby, done yourself proud . Keep it up. I miss those days you called in to the Victoria for a quick pint they were good days...”

Kevin Stuart said: “Obviously a man who knows what he is doing", while Matthew Abbey said: “Toby is a top guy, known him for years, he does a bloody great job in a tough industry.”

Denise Keay said: “Brilliant. Well done. There's a real shortage of good landlords" and Laurence Ward said: “Man after my own heart. Well done.”
