Luciano Spalletti was in no mood to get carried away after his Napoli side put in a spirited performance to condemn Liverpool to a 4-1 defeat in Italy on Wednesday evening.
The Reds have never won in Naples and that record remained intact as Jurgen Klopp's latest Champions League campaign got off to the worst possible start in Group A.
The Italians were 3-0 up by half-time and also missed a first half penalty as they put the shell-shocked visitors to the sword, but Gli Azzurri boss Spelletti, who watched the match with a fractured collarbone, was keen to keep his players grounded after a famous European win the Italian club.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the match, he said: “It’s an important result, one judges his performance depending on the opponents and they are called Liverpool so it’s surely a result that makes the news. What’s important is to play our football regardless of who we face and do it continuously, without interruptions. That’s what highlights the level of personality.
“You never settle (for a draw), you never tell your players that they have limits, because solutions can be found and nothing is impossible when there is this (player) availability. We played a good game, but we gave no lessons, we should not be presumptuous. Tomorrow morning we must train well, it’s your duty when you wear this kit. You must be able to do tomorrow what you did today.”
Despite conceding four times, Liverpool had plenty of possession and appeared to control the game for a large chunk of the second half without adding to Luis Diaz early second half goal. And despite registering such a spectacular win, Spelletti conceded that things could have gone better for the hosts after the break.
He added: “I wouldn’t have celebrated anyway because I had to keep my players on alert. When you face these teams, one detail is enough to change the game. After I made the subs, we let them lead the game and it wasn’t fine, but this is a positive start.”
