'No disrespect' - Wilson highlights difference between Bruce's Newcastle to current Magpies team

Callum Wilson admits that he is playing for a different Newcastle United compared to the club he was signed to keep in the Premier League back in 2020.

The £20million striker came in under Steve Bruce as a marquee summer signing but has watched on as millions were splashed out on Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman to name a few. However, through it all Wilson has kept his head down and retained his place for the most part, and testament to that is the fact he could end the season as top scorer.

After notching his 13th of the season Wilson told reporters: "It's going well, it shows that previous seasons have not been good enough really as a striker. You want to be up 15 plus for your club and since we've brought in new players, it's added a new dimension to the football team.

"On the pitch, we have more quality now, that's no disrespect to the players that have gone before but now we've got world class players who are playing week-in-week-out around you and it creates more opportunities.

"All you can do is keep going, I got another opportunity from the start and like the last time I started you've just got to repay the faith and I've managed to get another brace."

Wilson topped his night off with a stunning curling finish that left England keeper Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park. It was the type of goal Alan Shearer used to be proud of.

Level-headed Wilson added: "It was a nice finish. "When you take a first touch like that it's inviting you to hit it and as I've curled it, you concentrate on your technique but as you look up you start wheeling away because you can see where it's going and the trajectory it's just going to fly in the top corner unless the goalkeeper made an unreal save. Thankfully it went in and it was a nice moment for sure."

Wilson is still looking for a hat-trick in Newcastle colours after being taken off on two goals at Goodison. But he said: "It will come and I guess it must be kept safe for a special occasion. I've been on a brace on so many occasions and not been able to get the match ball so one for Newcastle is surely on the horizon!"
