No barbecues allowed as popular summer spot hit with wildfire risk

SCOTS planning a trip to Loch Lomond have been warned that no barbecues are allowed.

Rangers of the national park took to social media to share that due to the warmer weather expected, they have been warned of an increased risk of wildfires.

Due to this, the park won't be allowing visitors to light barbeques this week.

They said: "Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have advised that from March 17 until 21 there is a 'very high' and 'extreme' risk of wildfire across areas of Scotland, including in the National Park.

"During this time, we ask that you do not have barbeques or open fires to help prevent the risk of wildfire, which can have devastating effects."

Group Commander Murray Dalgleish, a wildfire tactical advisor for the SFRS, said: "We are asking the public to exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame.

"Many rural and remote communities are hugely impacted by wildfires, which can cause significant damage.

"Livestock, farmland, wildlife, protected woodland and sites of special scientific interest can all be devastated by these fires, as can the lives of people living and working in rural communities.

"These fires can also have a hugely negative impact on the environment and the release of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

"Human behaviour can significantly lower the chance of a wildfire starting, so it is crucial that people act safely and responsibly in rural environments and always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code."

The SFRS has urged people who live within or who may enter rural environments to exercise caution.

Wildfire warnings have been issued across Scotland until Friday, March 21.
