Ann-Katrin Berger

Defending champion NJ/NY Gotham FC has made a significant addition to their roster by signing Germany international goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger from Chelsea. The transfer deal, which involved an undisclosed fee, was announced by Gotham on Friday. Berger has signed a one-year contract through 2024, with an option for the 2025 National Women's Soccer League season.

Gotham's head coach, Juan Carlos Amoros, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, praising Berger's strength, experience, and professionalism. He highlighted her international experience and consistent high-level performance as key attributes that she brings to the team.

Ann-Katrin Berger has been a standout player for Chelsea in the Women's Super League since 2019, contributing to the club's four consecutive WSL title wins from 2019 to 2023. She also represented Germany in the 2023 Women's World Cup, showcasing her talent on the global stage.

Prior to her time at Chelsea, Berger played for Birmingham and was recognized as the WSL 1 Players' Player of the Year in 2017. Her remarkable comeback from thyroid cancer earned her accolades and a spot in the Professional Footballer's Association Women's Team of the Year.

Expressing her enthusiasm about joining Gotham FC, Berger emphasized her eagerness to compete in the NWSL, which she considers one of the top leagues in the world. The goalkeeper's journey began in Germany at Sindelfingen before she made her mark at clubs like Turbine Potsdam and Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes lauded Berger's goalkeeping prowess, particularly her skill in saving penalties, and acknowledged her legendary status at the club. Hayes expressed admiration for Berger's determination to play and compete at the highest level, wishing her success in her future endeavors.

Gotham FC also announced the departure of goalkeeper Erin McKinney as part of the roster changes. The addition of Ann-Katrin Berger is expected to bolster Gotham's squad and enhance their competitiveness in the NWSL.
