Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is generating excitement as it prepares to release its quarterly results. The electric vehicle maker received a boost from Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (OTC:NSANY), which confirmed its adoption of the North American Charging Standard in collaboration with Tesla.
The EV giant has had its forth competitor to adopt the NACS charging adapter to access its charging stations. Tesla designed the charging port, which was only designed for Tesla prior 2022.
The NACS standard support AC charging and DC fast-charging, which Nissan, Ford, GM, and Rivian use an adapter for the Tesla charging stations.
Nissan’s decision to adopt the charging standard is aimed at providing more charging options to its customers. The partnership marks a significant milestone, with Nissan becoming the first Japanese automaker to forge such a collaboration with Tesla.
“We are pleased to announce Nissan has reached an agreement with Tesla to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) beginning in 2025,” said Nissan in a company statement. “From 2024, Nissan will make a NASC charging adapter available for ARIYA models which are currently equipped with the Combhine Chargin System 1 (CCS10 for DC fast charging.”
Starting in 2024, Nissan will offer a NACS charging adapter for its Ariya models equipped with Combined Charging System 1 DC fast charging. By 2025, Nissan plans to introduce EVs for the U.S. and Canadian markets featuring a NACS port. This will enable seamless and convenient charging on the Tesla Supercharger network, expanding the number of fast-charging locations available for Nissan EV owners.
Other major automakers and charging networks, including General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM), Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F), and Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NYSE:RIVN), have also embraced the NACS charging port standard and will offer compatible adapters.
Ford was the first automobile company to work with Tesla on the NACS where it would allow Ford drivers to use Tesla charging stations. Nissan will be the first Japanese automaker to accept the NACS port that will allow EV drivers to charge at various Tesla charging stations.
The White House later stated that using Tesla standard plugs would be eligible for billions of dollars in subsidies.
“To ensure that public-supported EV charging is available, dependable, and inexpensive for all vehicles, we created minimum requirements earlier this year. We also mandated compatibility to encourage competition.”said Robyn Patterson, The White House spokesperson. “Those specifications permit the installation of CCS and NACS, provided that drivers may rely at least on CCS.”
