Nintendo's Biggest Game of the Summer Has Apparently Leaked Online 2 Weeks Early

Nintendo is having a bad week when it comes to protecting its intellectual property.

Footage from the latest release in the video game maker's much-beloved 'Zelda' franchise -- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom -- has leaked online, almost two weeks ahead of the game's scheduled debut on May 12.

Physical copies of the game popped up online over the weekend, selling for as much as $300 each, according to Endgadget, and now even digital copies have been spotted for download online.

Nintendo did not immediately return a request for comment, but the company -- one of the world's oldest and most accomplished gaming companies -- is apparently well-known for utilizing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to combat leaks.

Last month, Nintendo subpoenaed file sharing social platform Discord to find out the identity of a user who leaked a 'Tears of the Kingdom' art book ahead of its release.

Nintendo isn't the only video game manufacturer to have a big leak recently.

Last September, a trove of content from the next Grand Theft Auto game leaked online with a hacker uploading 90 videos from a test build of the game.

Over the weekend, a Twitter account with 1.1 million followers posted the entire Super Mario Bros. Movie -- which is based on Nintendo IP -- on its account and accumulated 9 million views over seven hours before Twitter moderators finally took the account down, according to Forbes.
