Nintendo Just Dropped The Switch 2 Trailer & Here’s Everything We Know

Well, folks, the wait is finally over. After a long few months of rumours and leaks spreading online, Nintendo finally announced the Nintendo Switch 2.

So far, that’s all we know. Nintendo has only dropped a trailer announcing a future Nintendo Direct and will share future details on April 2 this year.

The original console launched back in 2017 and has since launched Lite and OLED models. These models have sold a combined 146 million units, making it one of the best-selling consoles ever. However, those consoles still share the same hardware for an almost decade-old console. For that reason, fans have been clamouring for an update, as some newer titles were starting to feel held back due to the Switch’s limitations.

So, here’s everything Nintendo announced last night about the upcoming console.

What you need to know

Nintendo announced at 12 AM AEDT that there will be an upcoming Nintendo Direct, during which the company plans to reveal more about the new console. We can expect to hear more about hardware details, pricing, and launch titles for the new console.

It’s unknown right now how substantial a leap the Nintendo Switch 2 will be compared to the first console. So far, we know that the console will be backwards compatible with physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some previous titles may not be fully supported or compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo has also announced that a Nintendo Switch 2 Experience will be available in Melbourne from May 10 to May 11. So, while we may not know a current release date, this does line up with previous rumours of a June launch.

In the video, we did get to the brand-new Switch and Mario Kart game. The most significant immediate change is to the Joy-Cons, which now connect to the Switch with what looks like magnets instead of the original sliding port.

How much will the Switch 2 cost in Australia?

We can expect Nintendo to confirm prices officially as of April 2.

The original Nintendo Switch launched in Australia for $469.95 AUD, while the OLED Model was priced at $539. With the Switch 2 receiving some beefier hardware, we could see the console reaching over that $600 mark.

Other close competitors like the Steam Deck are priced similarly, with the base 256 GB LCD model costing $659 AUD. So, we can expect Switch 2 to reach a similar price point.

When will the Switch 2 be released in Australia?

At this stage, it’s uncertain. More information will be revealed at the upcoming Nintendo Direct. Registrations for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Experience will open from January 18 at 11am AEDT until January 26 at 11:59pm for anyone with a Nintendo Switch Online account.

The event will take place at Centrepiece at Melbourne Park on Olympic Boulevard. Click here to enter the randomly selected draw.

After years of waiting, it’s nice to finally have a date on when we can expect to learn more about the console. Until April, expect a bunch of rumours to start flying around. So, if anyone tells you they heard something from their uncle who works at Nintendo, it’s probably untrue unless you hear it straight from Nintendo themselves.
