Nine postcodes in Scotland named the luckiest in the country in new study

The luckiest postcodes in Scotland based off the number of wins in the Postcode Lottery have been named in a new study.

Research conducted by SolitaireBliss found Scotland was the luckiest country in the UK to win the competition - with six postcodes in the UK top ten.

The top areas for Postcode Lottery were found through winners data released by lottery.co.uk since 2011 and divided by the population of the area.

By this metric, the Outer Hebrides was named the luckiest area in Scotland, with 122.9 Postcode Lottery winners per 100,000 population, which is 130 per cent higher than the UK average.

The Outer Hebrides was named the luckiest place in Scotland (PA)

A total of 34 wins have been claimed in this area - including 101 residents from Berneray and North Uist, who were subject to a Channel 4 documentary after scooping £3m in 2020.

Perth was the second luckiest area in Scotland with 99.32 wins per 100,000 population - a total of 164 wins have been recorded in the area.

Galashiels was the third luckiest area with 89.66 wins per 100,000 people - which equates to 101 wins.

Inverness, Dumfries, Kilmarnock, Dundee, Kirkwall and Paisley also made the top nine luckiest places in Scotland.

Shetland was named the unluckiest postcode in Scotland, after only scooping 12 wins out of an estimate population of 23,086 - which is 51.97 wins per 100,000 people.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from SolitaireBliss said: “ Postcodelottery.co.uk claims that over two-thirds of Great Britain’s postcodes are playing.

“Winners are announced every day, so why do some areas have greater luck than others?

“Some reasons for this can be due to the number of players registered for each postcode, so nine entries for one postcode will have greater chances of winning the Postcode Millions prize than a single person entering their postcode alone.

Shetland was named the unluckiest place in Scotland (PA)

“This does not apply for any other prizes though, so for those postcode sectors that have greater than average luck when it comes to winning the £30,000 prize, it is likely that there are more individual postcodes registered in the area than usually seen elsewhere in the UK.

“You have to be in it to win it.”
