Nine out of the 10 wrongful death lawsuits filed in connection with the tragic crowd surge at the 2021 Astroworld festival have been settled, according to an attorney involved in the case. The lawsuits stemmed from the deadly incident that occurred during a concert by rapper Travis Scott on November 5, 2021.
Jury selection was scheduled to commence this week for one of the lawsuits, which was filed by the family of Madison Dubiski, a 23-year-old Houston resident who lost her life in the crowd crush. However, it was revealed during a court hearing that all but one of the wrongful death lawsuits have been resolved, including the one brought by Dubiski's family. The terms of the settlements have not been disclosed due to a gag order in place.
The remaining lawsuit is from the family of 9-year-old Ezra Blount, the youngest victim of the concert tragedy. Attorneys involved in the case are planning to convene next week to determine a trial date for the Blount family's lawsuit.
Following the Astroworld festival incident, over 4,000 plaintiffs filed numerous lawsuits, with Dubiski's case selected as the first to go to trial. More than 20 defendants, including Travis Scott, Apple (which livestreamed the concert), and Live Nation, were slated to stand trial this week.
Despite a police investigation, a grand jury decided not to indict Travis Scott and five others associated with the festival last year. The legal proceedings surrounding the Astroworld tragedy continue to unfold as the remaining lawsuit heads towards trial.
