Nine NIT students arrested in ragging case in Andhra Pradesh

The West Godavari police have arrested nine students of the A.P. National Institute of Technology (NIT) here after booking them under the A.P. Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997.

Produced in court

The accused, Kona Samuel, M. Subash, Y. Tejesh, T. Hemanth Kumar, T. Ranadheer, Sk. Gayub, Ch. Chetan, P. Tharun and Yuvaraj, were produced in the Tadepalligudem court.

They were released upon submission of personal bonds, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Dev Sharma said on Sunday.

The police questioned a few witnesses and were trying to gather evidence in the case, said Kovvur Deputy Superintendent of Police B. Srinath..

The victim, a second year Mechanical Engineering student of the institution, had lodged a complaint with the Tadepalligudem Town police on March 24, charging the accused with beating him up after detaining him in a hostel room on March 23 night, said the police.

The management of the institution suspended all the nine students and expelled them from the hostel too, said NIT Director C.S.P. Rao, who conducted a meeting with the faculty and non-teaching staff and reviewed the situation.
