Plans to create a series of new shops and businesses in the Anfield area have been approved.
Liverpool Council’s planning committee has signed off on the redevelopment of cleared, vacant land between Venmore Street, Walton Breck Road, Oswestry Street and Burleigh Road South in the shadow of Liverpool FC’s famous stadium. A parade of nine commercial units including a Co-op food store will now be built on the land that has sat unused since residential terraced properties were demolished in 2019.
An indicative list submitted as part of planning department documents said potential businesses that could move in include the Co-op, Heron frozen foods, a Greggs bakery, Subway sandwich shop, Papa John’s Pizza and a fish and chip restaurant.

A beauty parlour could also join. To the rear of the retail units parking is accessed from Venmore Street for 33 spaces, four of which are accessible.
The delivery yard is sited to the rear of the units, accessed from the main parking area and fenced from the publicly accessible space. A single electric vehicle charging point is being proposed by applicant Priority Space Ltd.
The committee was told the new retail units would be built to create a “vibrant and successful community” with a view to attract new jobs to the area. The applicant is seeking to use the new development to make Anfield “a better place to live, work and visit,” councillors heard.
More than 380 letters of consultation were issued ahead of the session, with proposals being welcomed in the community and by members of the committee. Anfield cllr Billy Marrat said: “This area has been dilapidated, run down and waste ground for years.
"This is probably the first part of a number of applications that will come in down the line.” Cllr Billy Lake added: “In an area like Anfield, close to the football ground, it will be very profitable.”
In recommending the proposals be approved, Cllr Tony Concepcion, committee chair, said: “This is a welcome application that brings investment into the area, breathes new life and jobs to the area.” Members voted unanimously to approve the scheme.
