Nikki Haley throws hat in the ring: Ex-UN envoy to take on Donald Trump in US presidential race

Inside the Americas © France24

The next presidential election in the United States is still 20 months away, but a second Republican has already thrown her hat in the ring: Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor and ex-US ambassador to the United Nations. She says she wants a "new generation" of leadership in Washington. Haley will now have to take on her former boss Donald Trump who announced his bid for re-election last year.

Also on the show: A team of journalists from France 2 has made a perilous journey alongside migrants in Colombia to cross the jungle into Panama. The reporters tell the story of how the migrants, from Venezuela, Haiti and Africa, put aside their fears to try and realise their dreams of one day reaching the United States. The passage from South America to Central America via the Darien Gap is a short but essential part of the journey.

Finally, the alleged Chinese spy balloon over the Americas last week brought new attention to proposed laws in several states that would ban citizens of China from buying property in the US. Critics say the proposals hark back to racist laws from the early 1900s preventing Asian Americans from owning land, homes and other buildings.
