Nike's famous Fernando Torres advert after Liverpool signed striker

Nike’s famous advert featuring former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is still popular to this day.

The Reds signed Torres from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2007. Rafa Benitez wanted to bring the Spaniard to Anfield, with a £26.5m deal agreed.

Torres was an instant hit on Merseyside and quickly became a fan favourite. The striker was also sponsored by Nike at the time, and featured in an advert released in 2007.

The sports manufacturer capitalised on Torres’ popularity in Liverpool and so made their advert themed around the striker and the city.

At the start of the video, it features Spanish music playing in the background to the tune of the famous chant made by Liverpool fans for Torres. The video then features various areas around the city which have been altered with a Spanish theme.

The side of one building is painted with the Spain flag, other buildings and ferries on the Mersey river have actual Spain flags on display. Also in the video is a room of people who are trying to learn the lyrics to the Torres chant in Spanish, while elsewhere the famous Cavern Club has its sign changed to the ‘Caverna Club’.

At the end of the video, a group of people can be seen playing a game of football, while Torres is seen for the first time as he walks his dog. The ball then gets accidentally kicked in Torres’ direction, which leads him to perform some skill before handing it back.

The person who got the ball back from Torres responds by saying ‘Gracias, mate’, before running back to his team-mates shouting in Spanish: “Let’s go. C’mon lads, yeah. Heads up”. The former Liverpool striker then walks away smiling while shaking his head.
