Nike have released a statement following Tiger Woods ’ recent arrival at Augusta National, as speculation surrounding his comeback at this week’s Masters continues to grow. Woods informed his fans at the weekend that he would be making the trip to Augusta before deciding whether he would compete in the event.
Following his arrival on Sunday Woods looked in fine condition and took to the famous Georgia range and course during the opening practice session of tournament week. One aspect of his Augusta return that took many eagle-eyed fans by surprise was in fact his choice of footwear.
Woods is synonymous with the sports brand Nike, and with their partnership recognised as one of the most notorious in the world of sport.
When practising in Georgia on Sunday, Woods appeared to have a pair of all-black Footjoy shoes on his feet, rather than a pair that included the famous Nike swoosh. In the midst of the wardrobe shock, Nike have since released a statement wishing one of the star athletes well.
The statement read: “Like golf fans around the world, we are delighted to see Tiger back on the course. His story continues to transcend sports. As he continues his return, we will work with him to meet his new needs.”
If Woods is to compete in this week’s tournament it would mark a remarkable comeback, after the American was involved in a high-speed car accident just 14 months ago. The 15-time major winner suffered open fractures to his lower right leg and further injuries to his foot and ankle in the crash.
A gruelling rehabilitation process then followed, with the five-time green jacket winner revealing that amputation ‘was on the table’ when he was being treated in the weeks after. 13 months on Woods took the golfing world by storm after his name was included on the Masters’ provisional entry list at the end of March.
