Nightmare Realm review: Not for the faint-hearted with Oscar-deserving horror actors

The Nightmare Realm has returned to Dublin, this time taking place at the Fruit & Veg Market in Dublin 7 rather than the RDS.

Having kicked off last week, many a Dub has already headed along and had the bejaysus scared out of them, including us. If you're thinking about experiencing The Nightmare Realm for yourself, you should know that it is for the bold and the brave.

Before even entering one of the mazes, you're greeted with creepy character actors who are just a mild taste of what's to follow once you enter one of the five terrifying attractions. The first experience we went for was the Cannibal's Playground and it was as horrifying as the name suggests.

The sharp corners along the dark trail paired with sudden loud bangs and eerie sounds is enough to make your hands sweat profusely. What really makes this one so scary are the actors who weep, scream, yell and beg for help. Although you know they won't touch you or do anything to harm you, their horrifying acting skills still leave you uneasy the whole time.

Next up was perhaps the creepiest of the lot, The Haunted Orphanage. Actors here are dressed in shabby attire, hiding among bunkbeds and putting on their best child-like voices begging you to take them out of the hellish surroundings you are reluctantly navigating through.

Given that many of the actors are playing children, expect plenty of excitable yet chilling performances, and a number of jump scares.

Feeling like we had a dose of bravery left inside us after those two nerve racking experiences (between which we had to take breaks), we decided to head into the Sewers. This one started off with some anxiety-inducing crawling through tunnels before navigating through an underground urban hell full of deformed creatures and dirty sewer dwellers, who certainly knew how to creep us out to the point where we could barely look at them.

The Nightmare Realm is for those who love the thrill of a horror movie and want to take it one step further to experience it in real life. If you are looking for scream-worthy jump scares, tense anticipation and an experience that truly immerses you into someone's worst nightmare, this attraction is for you.

While the time spent in the mazes will be full of sweaty palms, hunched shoulders and hands over faces, the nervous adrenaline giggles afterwards are utterly hilarious. If you need breaks in between each of the attractions, there is an area with picnic benches and food and drink options including toasted sandwiches, burgers and Chinese food.

The Nightmare Realm can be booked here. Tickets are priced from €22 to €36.
