Nightmare neighbour fined after arguments and loud music kept Gateshead residents awake at night

A nightmare neighbour has been fined more than £300 after her loud music and shouting kept residents in a Gateshead community awake at night.

Kelly Main, of Park Terrace, Swalwell, was served with a Community Protection Notice for making her neighbour's lives a misery - which she then ignored.

She played loud music late at night and in the early hours of the morning while visitors to her home argued, shouted, used raised voices with neighbours also hearing banging inside the property.

The behaviour disturbed neighbours and often prevented them from sleeping and sparked complaints to Gateshead Council's Private Sector Housing Team.

They warned Ms Main about her behaviour, but after all the attempts to get her to change failed, she was then served with a Community Protection Notice.

However, the noise from Ms Mains' home continued and she was summonsed to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court to answer the charges in February 2022.

Ms Main attended court and plead guilty for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice and causing her neighbours harassment, alarm and distress.

She was fined £200, £100 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Chair of the Gateshead Community Safety Board said: "Residents have a right to live peacefully in their homes, free from unreasonable noise.

"This resident blatantly ignored the warnings we gave them, they had plenty of opportunities to change their behaviour, but they chose not to.

"Repeatedly breaching a community protection notice under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act is a serious matter.

"The Act is there to protect ordinary people, and in this case, the neighbours clearly needed the protection of the law.

"We will continue to take action against people who harass their neighbours in this way."
