Night of mayhem on one Irish street as Gardai called to multiple incidents

Gardai had an extremely busy night on Saturday as nightlife returned - with a number of incidents taking place on the same street in a night of chaos.

In the first incident, Gardaí and emergency services attended after an alleged assault on the Gurranbraher road, just outside of Cork city, shortly after 11pm.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that a man aged in his 40s was treated by paramedics at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

A man aged in his 20s was arrested at the scene and conveyed to Gurranbraher Garda Station and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The spokesperson added that the man has since been charged in relation to this incident and is scheduled to appear before Cork District Court on Tuesday morning.

And in a separate incident on the same road just half an hour later, Gardaí arrested a man aged in his 50s following an incident of public order disruption.

The man was also brought to Gurranbraher Garda Station and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Meanwhile, a man was left in hospital after a vicious assault on Saturday evening in Dublin city centre.

The incident occurred on the first night since restrictions on the hospitality industry were lifted, including the 8pm curfew.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to the Irish Mirror that a probe had been launched into the incident:

He said: "Gardaí are investigating an alleged incident of assault on Trinity Street, Dublin 2, Saturday night, 22nd January 2022.

"A man aged in his 20s was taken to St James Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. No arrests have been made at this time. This investigation is ongoing."
