Nicole Kidman among star-studded cast of new Cecelia Ahern TV adaptation

Nicole Kidman is to star in the TV adaptation of Roar - which is based on a collection of short stories by Dublin writer Cecelia Ahern.

The eight-episode female-driven anthology series is created by Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive, who are the brains behind the Netflix hit GLOW, and features an all-star cast which includes Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever, Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Meera Syal, Fivel Stewart, Kara Hayward and more.

Nicole Kidman also serves as executive producer on the show.

Roar is said to be a "genre-bending anthology series that weaves together eight darkly comedic feminist fables that take unexpected approaches to subjects like gender roles, autonomy and identity".

Set to premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, April 15, it is one of the many new original series recently announced by the streaming service.

An official synopsis for the Roar describes the series as "an insightful, poignant, and sometimes hilarious portrait of what it means to be a woman today".

It is said to feature a "blend of magical realism, familiar domestic and professional scenarios, and futuristic worlds".

Speaking of Blossom Films, the company that is bringing Cecelia's stories to our screens, the author told RTE that they are "making women-centric stories, because there just weren’t enough, but they’re for everyone.

"You notice the difference when you’re watching a TV show and suddenly the woman is at the centre of the story and they’re not just the wife. For a woman, that’s really exciting."

She added: "It's incredible, particularly that collection of stories because I wrote it on the side. It was something I was writing for me. I desperately wanted it to be a TV series.

"I didn't know it would be published. I didn't think it would be something that my publishers would want because it's very different."
