Nicolas Pepe exit confirmed as Arsenal's ideal £35m transfer target hijacked by rival side

Here is your Arsenal transfer roundup on Thursday, August 25.

Pepe moves to Nice

Arsenal have agreed a deal with Nice for a season-long loan, football.london understands.

The Ivorian arrived as the Gunners club record signing back in 2019 for a fee of £72 million and has gone on to make 112 appearances, scoring 27 times and helping the club to FA Cup success in 2020. However, he has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta and failed to start a single game for Arsenal after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations in January of this year.

Despite featuring in pre-season, Arsenal were open to letting the 25-year-old leave and have agreed a deal to allow Pepe to join Nice for the season without an option to buy. The move is now expected to progress quickly and football.london understands that it is likely to be completed within the next 48 hours.

Arsenal could miss out on Paqueta

The north London side had been linked to Lucas Paqueta before the opening of the summer transfer window. Italian news outlet Calciomercato reported that the Gunners were interested in signing the Lyon midfielder.

However, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has claimed that West Ham are working on a deal to sign the Brazilian midfielder from Lyon. A bid worth €40million (£35million) has been made with talks advancing over a fee and personal terms to complete a deal. With another potential alternative to Tielemans being taken off the market, it is pivotal that Arsenal complete a deal before also losing out on Belgian.

Newcastle to sign old Arsenal target Alexander Isak

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Newcastle have agreed to a deal to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad, with Spanish reports quoting a deal to cost €75million Euros (£63million), which includes add-ons. The Sweden international had also previously been linked with a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners were heavily linked to the 22-year-old towards the end of the last January transfer window, but a deal never managed to materialise due to concerns over his £75 million release clause, The Athletic reported.

Instead of risking spending heavily on a potential deal as Newcastle have done, Edu searched for the perfect alternative in Jesus. A £45m fee is looking like an absolute bargain judging the 25-year-old’s start to life as a Gunner.
