Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon officially announced her resignation as leader of the SNP party on Wednesday morning during a press conference at Bute House in Edinburgh.
Following the shock announcement, all eyes have turned to who might be Ms Sturgeon's possible successor.
The first minister is expected to carry out her duties until a suitable leader is elected instead of an immediate resignation. But Scots will already be looking towards what the future may hold for the country in terms of a replacement leader.

Speaking during her press conference, Ms Sturgeon insisted her resignation is not a result of recent pressures - and reiterated that her decision comes with her love for her party and for Scotland.
Before the announcement, the first minister said that her role is "the best job in the world," and a "privilege."
In terms of a suitable replacement for Ms Sturgeon, there will be plenty candidates willing to throw their hat into the ring. The current deputy first minister, John Swinney, will be a name everyone will think of from the outset.
The 58-year-old was an ever-present figure during the Covid pandemic and has previously held many top jobs within Scottish government. John Swinney also initially took over as leader of the SNP between 2000-2004 following Alex Salmond's resignation.
Another well-known name and one that will no doubt be associated with the job is health secretary Humza Yousaf. After leading the country through the pandemic, Humza Yousaf's position has recently come under fire due to increased A&E waiting times across the country.
Another strong candidate within the party could be Kate Forbes. The 32-year-old cabinet secretary for finance has widely been tipped as a possible successor to Nicola Sturgeon due to her strong media presence and delivering the Scottish government's budget in 2020 after Derek Mackay quit.
In an emotional resignation speech, Ms Sturgeon praised the breadth of talent within her party - only time will now tell who will replace her on the hot seat.
