Nicola Sturgeon to make covid statement as case numbers soar across Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon will give a covid update tomorrow amid soaring case numbers.

The First Minister will provide a statement to MSPs at Holyrood where she will confirm the latest covid figures and any new guidance from the Scottish Government.

It will be the first update on the coronavirus pandemic by Ms Sturgeon in weeks and comes amid a huge spike in covid cases in recent days.

In the latest figures on Friday (March 11), it was confirmed that 13,220 new positive tests were recorded, with 22 new reported deaths of people who have tested positive.

Twenty three people were in intensive care with recently confirmed coronavirus while 1,663 were in hospital.

Professor Sir Gregor Smith spoke out on the soaring case numbers on Saturday, March 12, after the data from the Office for National Statistics showed that in the first week of March an estimated one in 18 Scots had the virus.

The Chief Medical Officer said there was "understandable interest/apprehension about rising case rates and hospital occupancy in Scotland" but he insisted that the situation "continues to be intensely monitored and assessed".

Posting on Twitter, he explained that covid rates were "increasing across all age groups", with this driven by rising numbers of the Omicron BA-2 sub-type, which is now dominant.

On February 22, the First Minister announced the end of most restrictions by March 21, including the legal requirement to wear face masks.
