Nicola Sturgeon has thanked Janey Godley for making her laugh 'in the toughest times' after resigning as First Minister yesterday.
The FM stepped down after eight years in the role at a press conference on Wednesday as she explained the "brutality" of modern politics had taken its toll. Following her resignation, Scots comedian Janey took to Twitter to share a hilarious voiceover from Sturgeon's resignation speech.
Retweeting Janey's spoof, she said: "Thanks to Frank for his door service over the years…and to the wonderful @JaneyGodley for always making me laugh, even in the toughest times."
In the press conference from Bute House in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said: "I am proud to stand here as the first female and longest serving incumbent of this office and I am very proud of what has been achieved in the years I’ve been blessed to do this.
"However, since the very first moment in the job, I have believed that part of serving well would be to know, almost instinctively, when the time is right, to make way for someone else. And when that time came, to have the courage to do so, even if to many across the country and in my party, might feel it too soon.
"In my head and in my heart I know that time is now. That it is right for me, for my party and for the country. And so today I am announcing my intention to step down as First Minister and leader of my party.”
Janey, who shot to fame in lockdown for her parodies of the coronavirus briefings, voiced over the FM's resignation. She said: "Well that's me resigned, least I never got sacked (haha Tories!) - somebody has drawn some f*****g balls on my bit of paper here...
"Anyhow, people have been saying, 'what are you going to do with your spare time noo Nicola?' - well I'll tell ye wit I'm gonna do... Know how you've seen 'Cruising with Jane McDonald?' Well I have decided to do caravaning with Nicola Sturgeon! It'll be brilliant! We will head all the high spots like Largs and Arbroath! I love a caravan."
Janey isn't the only famous face who has paid a tribute to Nicola Sturgeon after her emotional speech, as both Lorraine Kelly and Martin Compston wrote heartfelt statements about her time in office.
Taking to Twitter after the First Minister announced her resignation in a candid speech, Scots TV host Lorraine wrote: "“I am a human being as well as a politician” @NicolaSturgeon just gave an incredible deeply personal resignation speech.
"No matter where you stand on independence she is undeniably a brilliant politician and communicator, and will be missed as First Minister. Big shoes to fill."
Line of Duty actor Martin has been vocal in his support for independence and took to Twitter to pay tribute to the outgoing Sturgeon.
Praising her ability to tackle political opponents and progress the independence campaign, he said: "By far the most capable politician in the UK of the last decade.
"Ran rings round umpteen opposition leaders and prime ministers, @NicolaSturgeon leaves independence movement in a far stronger position than when she took over and deserved to go out on her terms. Be sorely missed."
