Nicola Sturgeon has slammed the "mindless and thuggish" behaviour of fans after a glass bottle was thrown on to the pitch at Sunday's game between Rangers and Celtic.
The First Minister commented after the start of the second half was delayed at Ibrox when the missile was launched into Celtic 'keeper Joe Hart 's goalmouth from a stand housing Gers fans.
Broken glass could be seen in chunks on the grass, with Hart demanding the shards were cleared off the park before the game could go ahead.
Following the match officers from Police Scotland confirmed they were looking into the incident.
Sturgeon was asked by LBC about her views on the incident, she said: "This behaviour is not acceptable, whether it happens at a football match or in the street.
"People throwing glass bottles is is just not acceptable, it's mindless, thuggish behaviour and it has no place in any civilised society.
"These are matters for the authorities, obviously, the football authorities and potentially for the police and the criminal justice authorities.
"People should be able to enjoy football.
"Football should be something that people can take their kids to and have a happy joyful occasion and behaviour like that, whether it's at an Old Firm match or any other football match besmirches that and it should absolutely be seen as unacceptable."
During the match, which Celtic won 2-1, Sky Sports co-commentator Ally McCoist branded it an act of "gross stupidity" while colleague Andy Walker also hit out at the missile that came from the home end.
Walker believes the moment of madness is damaging the reputation of the world famous derby.
The former Celtic striker said: "We're trying to sell this game around the world. Shameful anyone would throw anything on to the pitch, let alone a broken bottle."
While McCoist said: "You think nothing would surprise you any more but dearie me. Gross stupidity."
Rangers has said it is working with cops to identify the supporter.
Gers' SLO Greg Marshall said on Twitter: "We are working with Police Scotland to identify the individual who threw a bottle onto the pitch at half time yesterday.
"This delayed the start of the second half and put players safety in danger. Anyone with information can pass details anonymously to either the club or Police."
In a separate incident a member of Celtic 's backroom staff needed stitches for a head injury after being hit by a glass bottle at Ibrox.
