“I accept I’m a politician and people get to say all sorts of things about me and that’s part of the democratic process but there is a thing here about everybody as they exercise their freedom of speech. Whoever you are and whatever your views are doing that with a sense of responsibility because words have consequences and I think everybody in modern society has to be very aware of that.”

The article that was written by Jeremy Clarkson has seen a backlash on social media which has spilled over to be covered by this morning’s breakfast shows including GMB.

Ms Sturgeon went on to say: “I think what he said about Meghan Markle was deeply misogynist and downright awful and horrible. I have to say, taking a step back from it, my overwhelming emotion about guys like Jeremy Clarkson is pity.

“What is it that makes someone so distorted by hate that they end up wiring these things possible gives an insight into Jeremy Clarkson and the kind of person he is so maybe he just needs to stake a step back from things. Just think about life a bit more.”

The article that was written by Jeremy Clarkson and published in the Sun Newspaper said: "Meghan, though is a different story. I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.”

Jeremy Clarkson continued in his article to say: “At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she” (Meghan Markle) “is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, “Shame!” and throw lumps of excrement at her. Everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.”

Nicola Sturgeon isn’t the only one that has been critical of Jeremy Clarkson’s comments. Clarkson’s own daughter, Emily Clarkson took to Instagram to share her views on her father’s article.

She posted on Instagram: “My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.

“I want to make it clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hate.”
