Police have cordoned off Nicola Sturgeon's home after her husband Peter Murrell was arrested in connection with an investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.
A cordon was erected around the property in South Lanarkshire on Wednesday morning. Officers remain at the scene and a blue police tent has been set up in the driveway.
The 58-year-old remains in custody and is being questioned by detectives.
One neighbour told the Daily Record she noticed commotion and heavy police presence on the street at around 8am.
She said: “It must have all kicked off at around 8am because there was nobody when I went out with the bins at 7.
"When I saw all the police and then a tent being erected I thought someone had been hurt. There were even armed police. It was quite a shock."
"Officers were lying mats down outside a car at the house.
"There was even armed police here at one point."
A number of searches are being carried out at various addresses as part of the investigation, Police Scotland have confirmed.
A report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
A statement from the force said: “A 58-year-old man has today, Wednesday, 5 April 2023, been arrested as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.
“The man is in custody and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives. Officers are also carrying out searches at a number of addresses as part of the investigation.
“A report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
“The matter is active for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981 and the public are therefore advised to exercise caution if discussing it on social media. As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further.”
An SNP statement said: “Clearly it would not be appropriate to comment on any live police investigation but the SNP have been co-operating fully with this investigation and will continue to do so.
“At its meeting on Saturday, the governing body of the SNP, the NEC, agreed to a review of governance and transparency – that will be taken forward in the coming weeks.”
