Nicola Sturgeon responds to Andy Murray's resignation joke

NICOLA Sturgeon has responded to Andy Murray after he suggested he could be eyeing up her job.

Following the First Minister's resignation, the Scottish tennis star said politics might be his new thing after he lays down the racket.

Tweeting a BBC News article announcing that Sturgeon is leaving the post, Murray said: "Interesting vacancy. Was looking to get into politics when I finish playing."

Sturgeon appeared keen on a Murray administration, replying to the athlete: "I know I said I wouldn’t endorse anyone as my successor, but ..."

The SNP confirmed that nominations are now open to replace the outgoing FM.

It is not yet known when Sturgeon will officially step down following her shock resignation announcement on Wednesday morning.

But the SNP confirmed in an email to all members sent on Wednesday afternoon that nominations were now open to put forward candidates to fill her shoes.

With no obvious successor waiting in the wings, it is expected the party will face its first proper leadership election in nearly 20 years.
