Nicola Sturgeon pays tribute to former SNP councillor after death aged 84

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has paid tribute to a former Glasgow councillor Iris Gibson, who has died aged 84.

Gibson was a councillor representing wards in the Mosspark and Craigton areas for 16 years. She retired in 2015 due to ill health.

She replaced her son, Kenny, as a Glasgow councillor in 1999 when he was elected as an MSP.

Her daughter-in-law Patricia Gibson, an SNP MP, said she will be “sadly missed”.

Sturgeon posted her tribute on Twitter. She said she was “really sorry to hear this news”.

The FM added: “Iris was a powerhouse, a first class SNP councillor and passionate advocate for the communities she represented.

“She was also a lovely person and will be deeply missed. My condolences to Kenny and all the family.

Gibson was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease eight years ago.
