Nicola Sturgeon in Edinburgh to meet Michelle O'Neill after Sinn Fein election success

Nicola Sturgeon and Sinn Fein deputy leader Michelle O’Neill are meeting today for the first time since the Northern Ireland Assembly elections at the beginning of May.

The Daily Record reports that the First Minister will discuss issues such as the current cost-of-living crisis in the country, the Northern Ireland Protocol and the creation of a government at Stormont.

Since the election, trade between Northern Ireland and the UK has faced great economic barriers.

This is due to the main unionist party, the DUP, blocking the re-establishment of Stormont's power sharing institutions in protest at the Northern Ireland protocol.

Discussions have been in progress with party leaders in the region and the UK Government to resolve the issue.

This comes after a republican party won the most seats in the Assembly for the first time in Northern Ireland’s history.

Unionists and nationalists have to work together to form a government for the country, however the DUP is protesting for the protocol to be fixed before they will nominate O’Neill as First Minister.

Michelle O’Neill took to social media to confirm the meeting of the two leaders in Edinburgh, she said: “On my way now to meet with First Minister of Scotland @NicolaSturgeon in Edinburgh.

“We will be discussing supports for workers and families facing the cost of living crisis; the need for immediate government formation in Belfast and how we can strengthen relations moving forward”
