Nicola Sturgeon confronted by protester as First Minister forced to halt speech

Nicola Sturgeon was forced to halt a speech on violence against women after a protester heckled her over gender self-ID plans in Scotland.

The First Minister was speaking at the Zero Tolerance event in Edinburgh on Tuesday when the unidentified heckler accused her of stirring up a culture against women "standing up for women's rights".

In the clip shared on the Ocean Breath Cafe Twitter feed Sturgeon can be seen not reacting to the woman and allows her to finish the protest while organisers attempt to urge calm.

The heckler shouted: "Shame on you, you have fomented this culture in Scotland that basically tells women they are bigoted for standing up for women's rights.

"I see you and thousands of women around Scotland see you as well. Those of you who are sitting here complicit, keeping your mouths shut while women have actually been raped by males who have self-identified ID'd as women.

"That's nothing to do with trans rights and I support trans rights and have done for three decades now, and I will continue to."

Following the protest, the FM told those in attendance: "I do not seek to close down anybody's freedom of speech. It is important that voices are heard."

The Scottish Government has faced criticism from campaigners over the Gender Recognition Reform Bill which aims to speed up the time it takes for a trans person to obtain a gender recognition certificate (GRC) and lowers the age for obtaining one from 18 to 16.

Ministers also want to drop the requirement for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria and the need for a doctor’s report. Opponents believe the plans could threaten women’s sex-based rights and be exploited by criminals.

Since being introduced the Bill has sparked a rebellion in SNP ranks during the first parliamentary vote last month, but support by Labour MSPs helped carry the vote comfortably.

Ahead of a vote last month Community Safety Minister Ash Regan resigned from government due to her concerns over the Bill.
