Nicola Sturgeon calls for Boris Johnson to resign as PM to be fined for Partygate

Nicola Sturgeon has called on Boris Johnson to resign, calling him “out of touch” as he and Rishi Sunak are understood to be fined over the Partygate scandal.

The First Minister tweeted earlier this afternoon to call for the resignation of both the Prime Minister and Sunak.

She went on to say that Johnson has broken the law and repeatedly lied to parliament about his involvement with the scandal. Saying that the values of integrity that are "essential to the workings of a parliamentary democracy" demand that he resign.

The fines are for a number of parties held in Downing Street in 2020, at the height of Lockdown.

The parties were attended by both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, breaking the emergency laws brought in to slow the spread of Covid-19.

Sturgeon Tweeted: “Boris Johnson must resign. He broke the law and repeatedly lied to parliament about it. The basic values of integrity and decency - essential to the proper working of any parliamentary democracy - demand that he go.

"And he should take his out of touch chancellor with him.”

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister confirmed reports he will be fined over lockdown parties in Downing Street.

She said: "The Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer have today received notification that the Metropolitan police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices.

"We have no further details, but we will update you again when we do."

Reacting to the news, Labour leader Keir Starmer has called on both to resign.

He tweeted: "Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public.

"They must both resign. The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern. Britain deserves better."
