Nick Walsh Rangers penalty award dumbfounds St Mirren as star admits 'I couldn't believe he gave it'

Marcus Fraser admits he couldn't believe what he was seeing as ref Nick Walsh handed Rangers their dubious penalty award.

The Ibrox side moved two up through James Tavernier 's spot-kick after Declan Gallagher was penalised for a foul on Antonio Colak in Saturday’s hammering of St Mirren at Ibrox. But the decision left his Saints team-mate stunned. Full-back Fraser said: "I couldn't believe he gave it. I was behind Dec, I didn't have the clearest view by any means but Dec touches the ball.

"Colak went down like a second after and I couldn't believe he pointed to the spot. The ref obviously thought there was contact. Those are the things you need to go for you to stay in the game. The manager stressed before the game if we went 1-0 up or 1-0 down, the game plan stays the same. We got to half-time but when it goes to three, there are gaps and a wee bit of tiredness crept in. We'll look at that and try to improve."

The controversial award came when Gers were in front but Fraser had a golden chance to slash the deficit soon after as he was picked out by Scott Tanser. He wasted the chance, as did Mark O'Hara who failed to make the most of another in the second half.

Fraser added: "I had a chance at the back post, Curtis Main hit the bar, Allan McGregor made a good save from O'Hara. For my one, I either head it down or take a touch. I'll need to see it back. It felt as though the ball was in the air 20 seconds. I was going to take a touch, then I tried to cushion it into the far corner.

"I should've just got my head behind it, used the grease on the surface and hoped for the best. I don't want to see it back."
