Nick Offerman and Betty Gilpin have been announced as the latest additions to the cast of the upcoming Netflix historical drama series 'Death by Lightning.' The show, based on Candice Millard's novel 'Destiny Of The Republic,' will focus on the assassination of U.S. President James Garfield by Charles Guiteau.
Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Shannon were previously revealed as the series leads, with Shannon portraying President Garfield and Macfadyen as his assassin, Guiteau. Betty Gilpin will take on the role of Crete Garfield, the First Lady and wife of President Garfield. Nick Offerman is set to play Chester A. Arthur, Garfield's vice president and eventual successor.
Offerman, known for his award-winning guest role in HBO's 'The Last of Us,' has gained recognition for his work in popular shows like 'Parks and Recreation,' 'Pam & Tommy,' and 'Devs,' as well as films such as 'The Founder' and 'The Kings of Summer.' Gilpin, who received multiple Emmy nominations for her role in the Netflix series 'GLOW,' has also appeared in various TV shows like 'Mrs. Davis,' 'Gaslit,' 'Three Women,' and 'Nurse Jackie,' along with films like 'The Hunt,' 'The Tomorrow War,' and 'The Grudge.'
The series is created by Mike Makowsky, who will also serve as an executive producer. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, known for their work on 'Game of Thrones,' will also executive produce through Bighead Littlehead Productions, alongside Bernie Caulfield. Matt Ross is set to executive produce and direct all episodes, with Duncan Muggoch as co-executive producer.
